Various types of scholarships are granted in India to meritorious and needy students by government, non-government, and private organizations.

 

Types of Scholarship offered in India

  1. Merit-based scholarship: This scholarship is offered to meritorious students who have performed exceptionally in their academics. Any student who has scored above the minimum required marks can apply for this scholarship.
  2. Means-based scholarship: Students who have the caliber to perform well but couldn’t pursue their education due to financial restraints can apply for this type of scholarship. Parents or the guardian have to submit their income proof to be eligible for this kind of scholarship scheme.
  3. Scholarship for physically challenged: Specially abled students can apply for this type of scholarship. The government of India offers various scholarships for disabled students like pre-matric scholarship (Classes IX-X), post-matric Scholarship (Class XI to Master’s degree), and Post-Graduate scholarship.
  4. School scholarship and College scholarship: As the name clarifies, school scholarship and college scholarship is granted to school students and college students respectively to pursue higher education. National Talent Search Exam (NTSE) is one of the most popular school scholarships in India.
  5. Talent-based scholarship: Students who hold an exceptional talent in any non-academic field (including music, dance, arts, etc.) and a record for the same can apply for a talent-based scholarship.
  6. Sports-based scholarship: Students who have demonstrated excellent sporting skills are eligible for an Athletic scholarship. Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) are the top sports organizations offering sports scholarships in India.
  7. Women-Centric Scholarships: These scholarships are provided with the aim to empower women and promote girl education. Girl child scholarships are offered only to female students and on the basis of their merit performance and/or financial need.
